University of Texas John L. Warfield Center Supports TORCH Wildfire Reading Series

Torch Literary Arts is pleased to announce the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies at the University of Texas has awarded TORCH with financial support through the WCAAAS Community Connections Initiative. These dedicated funds will provide for two artist honorariums and other program needs for the TORCH Wildfire Reading Series on Jan. 31, 2016 featuring poets Mahogany l. Browne and Kelene Blake. The $300 award and purpose of the initiative is to “foster collaborations with Austin area organizations by providing resources such as community linkage, publicity, and financial support.”

The John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies is dedicated to the intellectual, political, artistic, and social development of people of African descent throughout Africa and the African Diaspora. Through its focus on research, community engagement, and programming, the Center is committed to activist and academic scholarship and engaged artistic work that seek to foster social justice for Black people around the world. Our approach to scholarship and the production of culture rests on the intersections of Critical Race Theory, Black Feminist Theory, and Queer Theory. We collaborate with local organizations in the enhancement and investigation of the lives of Black people, we promote the activist and/or academic careers of our faculty affiliates, and we coordinate with Black staff on University of Texas issues of relevance to all Black people.
